We Are Your Neighbors Here
Most contractors list a dozen towns on a service-area page and drive to all of them. Prathersville is different for us: it is the address on our sign. COMO Construction and Landscaping operates out of 1310 E Prathersville Rd, just north of Columbia off the US-63 corridor in Boone County. Our trucks leave from here every morning.
That is worth something practical to anyone in the immediate area. Scheduling is easier, because a job five minutes away fits into gaps that a job an hour away never would. Smaller work is genuinely worth our time rather than something we price ourselves out of. And if a question comes up a year after the pour, you are calling a crew that drives past your place regularly — not a call center in another city.
A Little Prathersville History
Prathersville is an unincorporated community in Boone County, sitting just north of Columbia. It takes its name from William Prather, a local merchant who built a store on his farm to supply the miners working nearby. The community had its own post office, established on June 2, 1886 and discontinued a little over eleven years later on September 20, 1897 — which tells you something about how the settlement pattern around here shifted as Columbia grew.
It is one of eighteen unincorporated communities scattered across Boone County, most of them the remains of crossroads settlements, mills and country stores from the same era. Places like Harrisburg, which was laid out expecting a railroad depot that never came, and Woodlandville out on Route J, tell a similar story. That history is part of why the ground north of Columbia still has the large lots and working acreage it does, rather than being subdivided the way the south and west sides were.
What We Build Around Prathersville and North Columbia
The work here reflects the property. Lots are bigger, outbuildings are common, and driveways are long.
- Long concrete driveways. A gravel drive that ruts out every spring is the most common call we get in this area. Rural drives need a deeper compacted base and thickness matched to what actually drives on them — a drive carrying a truck and trailer is not a suburban two-car pour.
- Shop, barn and machine-shed floors. Slabs sized for real loads, with reinforcement and joint layout planned around the span and the use.
- Equipment pads and turnarounds. Working property needs somewhere solid to put things and room to swing a trailer.
- Retaining walls and erosion control. North Boone County rolls, and bare banks wash. Walls with proper footings, geogrid and drainage behind the block stop it properly.
- Patios and stamped concrete. Bigger yards mean bigger patios, fire pits and seat walls — and room to do them well.
- Decks and deck repair. New builds on footings below the frost line, and repairs to the ones that were not.
The Wider North Columbia Area
Beyond Prathersville itself we cover the whole north and northeast side of Columbia, which is the closest ground to our shop:
- The Route B and US-63 North corridor — acreage properties, outbuildings and a mix of established homes and commercial property
- Lake of the Woods — the recreation area on the northeast side, an 18-hole municipal golf course on 145 acres off East St. Charles Road with a fishing lake and pool, and the neighborhoods around it
- North Village arts district — Columbia's historic north-side district, where finish and materials matter as much as the pour
- The neighborhoods off Rangeline Street and Clark Lane
For the rest of the city — Old Hawthorne, Thornbrook, Rock Bridge and the southwest subdivisions — see our Columbia neighborhoods page.
Small job close to home? Still worth calling.
Plenty of contractors quietly price themselves out of small work because the drive eats the margin. When the job is five minutes from our yard that maths changes. A short stretch of driveway, a set of steps, a patio, a small wall — if you are in Prathersville or north Columbia, ask. Worst case we tell you honestly that it is not worth doing yet.
